In our shed was an old log I had acquired a few years ago which was just taking up space on a shelf. I thought I should try to turn it into something since it was large enough to produce a reasonably-sized piece. The log is probably Spruce so it might not make anything too fancy but I'd done a previous Spruce piece that had some interesting grain so I thought it would be worth a shot.
I planned to cut the log in half along the grain and turn a cross-grained piece. The geometry of a halved log kind of dictates a bowl so that's what I
made - specifically a deep bowl that used most of the wood. The turning was pretty straightforward except the bowl kept changing shape slightly - probably due to the wood not being completely dry - so I needed to keep re-rounding it. Eventually I gave up on that and just worked with it in whatever (slightly) wonky shape it wanted to be. The log also had an embedded branch that was a bit loose so I epoxied that in place to solidify the wall.
