I had a request from a friend for a wooden yarn bowl. A convenient example picture was provided, which was good since I had never heard of a yarn bowl; a knitter I am not. For those in a like state of obliviousness, apparently the bowl keeps a round ball of yarn from rolling away or accumulating cat/dog/weasel fur from the floor.
In general the bowl has a hole or slot from which to feed the yarn and the most basic design is just a bowl with a slot. However my friend is something of a cat afficianado, with lesser afficiencies (not a word) for dog, hamster, hedgehog, reptile, etc., etc. So I thought I'd go with a cat motif to make it a bit more interesting.
The inside of the bowl was turned on the lathe of course, and then the outside was carved by hand. Some process details are available
here.
