I thought I could use a couple little bowls for small snacks like nuts, so I turned these two. They were both from 1" thick wood (or "four quarters" if you want to sound like you know what you're talking about at the wood store). One of them was a plank of roasted curly maple, which was an impulse buy just because I liked the look. It has the nice curly-maple figure combined with a dark-caramel colour from the roasting process. I was quite pleased with the look of the finished bowl (it's the darker one above). Both were turned the same way; using double-sided tape to hold the blank to a flat plate while the inside and part of the outside was turned, then flipping around and mounting in a jam chuck to complete the bottom and bottom rim.
