The body of this largish breadboard is formed from laminated quarter-cut maple planks, and incorporates contrasting strips of Purpleheart, Cherry and
Thermally Modified Poplar.
A few years ago I had bought a 1975-2016 digital archive of Fine Woodworking magazine and an article in a 2013 edition by Ontario woodworker Scott Lewis provided construction details, with this board being very similar to his design.
In brief, the
process starts with the full maple board and then a curved slot of the desired width is cut out of it. Thin strips of an insert wood whose total width is the same as that of the slot are then glued into the slot by compressing the board to squeeze and conform the strips to the curve. Once the glue dries, this process is repeated to incorporate each of the other two inserts.
