The "woven" look for a breadboard is a bit of a standard pattern but I liked the visual effect of some I had seen so I thought I'd go ahead and make one myself. In this board, figured maple is used for the light-colored wood with walnut for the darker pieces. It worked out reasonably well although if I was doing it again I would probably choose the light wood to have a less complex and varying grain, since the variation tends to detract from the weave pattern.
The construction consists of
making individual pieces of wood all of the same thickness and gluing them together in the appropriate pattern. The key is to ensure the pieces are very accurately made to minimize any gaps. Most of the 187 pieces were within 0.003" of the desired size so any visible gaps are down to my imperfect gluing or clamping.
