Cabinet - Display
I had many of my lathe-turned items stashed away on top of a filing cabinet in the study but after trying to cram in yet another one, it became apparent that I needed more display room. Or perhaps more people willing to ask for odd and nonfunctional vessels. At any rate after a bit of thought I realized that I could kill a few birds with one stone and clean up the adjacent area which had Sue's permanent temporary library and some device-charging equipment by making a display cabinet that sat beside the filing cabinet.

The cabinet itself is constructed from cherry plywood with solid cherry facing. Cupboards with doors are used to accommodate (hide) the library contents and an open area with a ceramic tile floor and power bar serve as the charging station. The fireproof tile will hopefully add a minute or two delay to the house going up in flames should some battery-powered device have a fiery meltdown. The tile and its wood frame are removable to achieve a conventional cabinet footprint.

The cabinet top and a pair of display shelves above should give me a few more years of vessel display space. The shelves are open for optimal display purposes which should be OK as long as Saskatchewan remains tectonically inactive.

The cabinet front is rounded so it is less likely to be mistaken for something from Ikea, plus it made for a more-interesting construction. Panels made from Aspen plywood are used in the doors with a pierced pattern derived from a Henri Matisse "Papier Dècoupè" (cut paper) design.
