Deck
The backyard wooden deck attached to my mother-in-law's house was fairly aged. As with all wooden decks it needed to be regularly stained but rotted boards often needed to be replaced too and worse, the substructure was rotting. She decided she wanted a nice maintenance-free composite deck as a replacement. I did up some plans with the changes she wanted along with cost estimates and we actually got a very reasonable quote to get it constructed. However I thought I could use a summer project so volunteered to do the work.

We used the existing concrete pilings that were still in good shape and on them built a brown treated wood frame with composite decking topped with an aluminum railing. It was built at a relatively leisurely pace with myself and Sue spending a couple hours a day 5 or six days a week. At that rate it took about 6 weeks from demolition to christening.

I thought it might be interesting to have a time-lapse of the construction so I set up a camera under the garage eaves to track our progress. Videos of the demolition and construction are above. Of course I also took photos in progress which can be seen here.
