This little item is pretty much my first effort at woodworking. It is made from a piece of 1" dowel. The interesting thing is that it rolls in a wobbling fashion. The "design" was based on an odd construction set I had as a kid. It consisted exclusively of thin plastic octagons with a slot cut in each side. You could connect these by sliding them together at the slots so that you would have two pieces at right angles. You could thereby make long floppy things, or squarish things, etc. I noticed a similar set in my adulthood, which I bought for a nephew. Unfortunately, 10 or 15 minutes of playing with these pretty much exhausted all the interesting permutations of ways they could connect - much less fun than Tinker Toys or even Lego - but I digress. At any rate, if you put two of these octagons together, they would roll in a wobbling fashion
like this. The memory of a pair of these together was what I tried for, and it worked out pretty much as I had remembered.
