We recently replaced out tired-out 25-year-old air conditioner. In addition to getting something that actually cooled well, we had the location changed from beside (well, actually inset into) the deck to out front. This removed the noise factor when you were having a conversation on the deck and also got rid of the awkward deck cut-out and path-narrowing issues.
The only practical place for the new A/C was in front of the house, and a globe cedar was removed to make room (to another friendly yard, you will be happy to know). However, the big grey A/C isn't a great look for the front so I thought I'd
whip up a concealing lattice for it.
I've done a few lattices like this one now so it was pretty straightforward. It is composed of three pieces, each with brown treated lattice and cedar frames. The frame tops were made to match the South-side fence but that was a bit futile since the fence can't actually be seen from the front. The lattice surrounds the air conditioner with 9 or 10" of space, giving it plenty of room to breathe, so to speak. The frames are held together with construction screws and the lattice is tacked to the frames to keep things stable.
