I had thought now and again that a lattice at the front of our side yard might look nice and provide a bit more privacy so after completing a lattice fence this summer, it seemed like an auspicious time to look at a front divider along the same lines.
The front lattice uses the same "privacy" lattice as the fence, meaning the holes are small compared to your garden-variety (so to speak) lattice. The top is curved, although not with the same sinusoidally-shaped contour as the fence - it didn't really work out with the positioning of the doorway. I also
made the top frame wider than the one on the fence to provide a bit more strength. While the lattice and post are brown treated wood, I made the door and top frames from cedar to avoid the significant colour differences between surface and inside wood you see in the treated lumber. Ironically I then failed to color-match the pieces of cedar I used, resulting in significant color differences among the pieces. Fortunately the biggest color variations are hidden by foliage in the front yard. I laminated together cedar fence pickets for the door frame and it's actually kind of amazing the amount of color and grain difference you see just board-to-board.
