OK, I know - it's just a stupid stick. But a nice one! We needed a way that was a bit more convenient than getting up on a kitchen chair to shut off the smoke (toast) detector in the kitchen. I figured yer basic stick was the answer, but since it was going to hang on the fridge, it should at least be presentable. I had some leftover pieces of wood from various projects lying around, so I put this together and hung it with a little leather loop to a magnetic hook. We have since gotten rid of the kitchen smoke detector since the ratio of false alarms to real alarms was infinite.
Update 2020: Different house, different fridge, different smoke detectors (now down the hall). But 25 years later the stick is still used to desensitize detectors. These days they mostly act more as a broiling alarm than a toasting alarm.
