This carving was a copy based on a magazine photo of a stylized swan. My mother had pointed it out to me at one time since she thought it was nice. It was a pretty simple design, so I carved a small version for her. The design is kind of minimalist, which appealed to me, and it all kind of blends together. It is carved from Swiss Pear, which has quite a subtle grain. However, while this wood could be sanded to a fine finish, it was very difficult to remove the sanding marks. I have seen this effect in African Mahogany as well, where it needs much more sanding time than most other woods to get an unblemished surface.
