This little vessel is made from a branch of an Ornamental Crab tree in our back yard. The branch had to be removed to make room for construction equipment about a dozen years ago during some renovations. I saved a few lengths, with this being the largest-diameter piece.
I didn't have a specific design objective in mind this time around; rather I wanted a project to try out a new hollowing system. I chose to make a deepish vessel with a narrow opening so it would be a bit of a challenge. The system worked out well (much better than hollowing by hand) and the walls were turned to be about 1/8" thick.
I'm not a huge fan of plain turnings so I initially thought I would add some carving/piercing/incising to it, but the grain turned out to be so interesting by itself that it didn't need anything else. There are some details on the turning and hollowing
here.
