Vessel - Patchwork
A
In the same way that a patchwork quilt is made by sewing together pieces of fabric with different patterns, so this patchwork vessel is made by sewing together pieces of wood with different inscribed patterns.

The design for this rather impractical vessel evolved from wanting to do some turning, which for me is typically followed by some post-turning enhancement and then this was flavoured by a desire to do something a bit different. I modestly suggest that I succeeded on the "different" part.

As one might surmise, the process used to make the vessel was a bit involved. I started by turning a vessel from cherry and then cut it into 37 pieces. Those had finish applied and then I carved patterns through the finish into the wood of each piece. White paint was brushed on and then wiped off the surface to enhance the contrast and then thread holes were marked and drilled, followed by a couple more coats of finish. Finally the pieces were rejoined by stitching them together with a heavy black thread. So there were no particularly tricky techniques required and the straightforward approach of applying gobs of time seemed to do the trick.
