A slice-and-fill piece is something that I've thought for a long time that I should try, but the impetus was never quite high enough to push it along. I finally had enough time and no other pressing projects, so that let me indulge this thought with what you see here. I call it a trefoil due to the three intersecting rings that circle it, in a similar manner to the
Trefoil I made over 25 years ago (Egads!).
The construction process was simply to make a cut right through the object and fill it with a different piece of wood, glue it back together and repeat as necessary. However for everything to align nicely, the replacement wood must be exactly the width of the cut, and of course the two halves must be correctly realigned. To get a consistent slot width I used a rotating-blade saw and for alignment of the halves, a metal center guide-rod was employed. Plenty of construction photos and wordage is available
here.
