Vacuum Flask
A
This was another piece that I made based on some wood that I had available. This particular one was from a branch of a poplar tree from my parent's front yard. This 5-inch diameter branch was one of the smaller ones; the main trunk was close to 4' in diameter. This piece had been sitting around for probably 10 or 15 years (the dangers of having a basement).

Poplar is a pretty soft wood, so I needed a "subject" that didn't have much fine detail. I thought it might be interesting to make a vessel that looked like it had the side sucked in, hence the play-on-words "vacuum flask" name. Unfortunately, it ended up looking to my eyes more like some kind of funky chair. But there is some interesting spalting in the wood, and the center of the branch was a thin dry brown section that was exposed a bit more by the carved-out section, so it is not a total loss.
