This wastebasket was made for our ensuite bathroom. Of course it already had a completely functional plastic model but I had in mind that I could make a nice thin-sided wood version and as a bonus, it would use up a surplus roll of cherry veneer that was taking up space in the workshop.
I somewhat arbitrarily (and perhaps unwisely) decided to essentially replicate the design of the current plastic wastebasket with the new wooden model. That meant that it needed semi-circular ends with tapered sides and a rounded bottom, most of which ended up being trickier to achieve than originally supposed. However it all came together in about a month with a minimum of redos so I can't complain too much.
The wastebasket was constructed by starting with a shaped cherry bottom and adding layers of cherry veneer, gluing them on one layer at a time with the aid of a solid wastebasket-shaped form. I was reasonably pleased with the finished product although I don't think I could recommend the "build it up a layer at a time" technique to anyone that does not have a lot of time and a spare vacuum press on their hands.
I added some diamond-shaped marquetry to the outer layer for a bit more visual interest. It used a nicely-contrasting but unlabelled veneer from an old selection so the wood species is a mystery. It should surprise few that I took the odd photo during the construction which as usual reside on the
