I noticed a company logo once that used a sort of cube outline that I thought looked pretty neat. I ended up making this little piece based on that shape, but it took a few tries to get it right. The first couple times I tried to rough-cut the shape too close to the final size (since I didn't want to do a bunch of sanding), and ended up not having enough material left over. The last one I made with the form substantially thicker than the desired goal, and of course, ended up doing a bunch of sanding. Most of the sanding was done using thin strips of sandpaper (1/16" to 1/4") cut from a regular sheet of sandpaper. I started at 150 grit and sanded down through 600 grit, making it very smooth. I chose Birch as a wood since it has a fairly subtle grain and enough strength to hold together with the thin profile.
