Cutting Board - 2" Maple
An acquaintance had bought a large butcher-block cutting board but it had cracked soon after he started using it despite following the care instructions. A replacement didn't waste much time before it cracked in the same manner so he got hold of me to find out if I had any spare cutting boards. I did have one available but on the practical/decorative spectrum it was close to the "too nice to use" end so I offered to make a classic butcher block version for him.

He wanted something pretty beefy and we agreed on a 16x20" Maple brick-pattern board that was 2" thick. Construction was pretty straightforward; a single 8/4 plank was cleaned up and "rearranged" to make the board. The resulting pattern ended up being a bit unusual with lighter areas usually around the periphery of the blocks forming the board. It obviously has to be due to that pattern being present in the plank used but I confess to having no good theories as to what might cause that effect. However it did end up with a sort of "old brick wall" look to it.
