House Numbers - Soapstone
I had purchased a largish black plastic mailbox that did not look too bad except for the word "MAIL" in large embossed white-painted letters on the cover, presumably there in case someone mistook it for a treasure chest hanging outside your front door. I chiseled off the letters to be flush with the rest of the cover, but this left a rather unsightly section that needed to be hidden. To accomplish this, I made a soapstone panel with the house number to cover it over. The numbers were done to match a set of wooden house numbers I had made some years before. Those were wood, and it was necessary to refinish them periodically. Since I don't get along well with refinishing, I wanted to avoid that in this set - hence the soapstone. The number plate was made from a single piece, with the numbers just carved (or more like abraded) out of the blank, and the plate was glued over the problem section of the mailbox.
