This is your standard kitchen spoon holder. It was made from soapstone, polished and then finished to seal it. I'm not sure why it seems better to put a messy spoon on a spoon holder rather than the countertop which inevitable gets messy and needs to be cleaned anyway, but it does. The bottom view shows the greyish colour of the raw stone - it looks substantially different after polishing (for which I used fine steel wool). The stone used in the holder is actually semi-transparent; you can see veining in the stone if you hold it up to the light. But mostly I just put messy spoons on it.
