I had failed to find any house numbers that I liked for our house, so I decided to make a set. I selected a font that I liked and then just printed out some numbers as a pattern. I pondered the size, and ended up with a 5" height, which looked pretty big when I was making them. However, as seen from the curb, they are none too large - maybe 7" would have been better in retrospect. I used black analyne dye to "ebonize" the maple. The dye comes in a powder and is very fine. I find that whenever I use it, I inevitably find little tiny dots of it on my arms and hands. They are usually not obvious until I wash up, and then little black runs appear wherever the powder was sitting.
These numbers served pizza delivery guys well for over 20 years at which point they were
updated with a larger version in a more modern font.
