This rather pathetic little piece is a representation of a Klein bottle. The Klein bottle was suggested by a buddy of mine as an interesting carving exercise. The concept is that it is a one-sided bottle that sort of intersects itself, a bit like a mobius strip in three dimensions. Unfortunately, it is not very impressive unless you can see through the bottle to appreciate the shape. The carving was only the outside of the bottle, of course. Theoretically, you could carve a real one from a single piece of wood with some very sophisticated, articulated carving tools, but then you'd have to X-ray it to prove it was right inside. Or carve it really, really thin, and shine a light through it. I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader. I used Zebra Wood for this little bottle. It has a striking grain, which is a bit too obvious for my taste. Adding to the experience of carving Zebra Wood is that it really stinks when cut - sort of the opposite of Rosewood.
