I had an old mahogany bowl blank from many years ago. It was cracked, which I figured would limit the utility of any bowls made from it, but it looked like it might make a fine mallet head. I have a couple of mallets, but in a Goldilocks-ian way, one is usually too big and the other is usually too small. This one would be juuust right. I turned the head and handle separately, and friction-fit them together. The crack in the head was filled using wood glue, with the aid of a vaccuum to help draw the glue deeper into the crack. I like the look of the finished piece, and the mallet is in fact just the right size. Of course, now that I have used it a bit, it is not quite so pristine as it was in these pictures.
