A friend had indirectly requested a paper towel holder (as in "you should be able to make one of those"). It seemed like a nice simple project, so I made one up from oak to match her cupboards. The standard models that are most commonly available tend to have problems with the arms, which are often sproingy plastic with a short shaft holding the roll. Eventually the arms get weak and the roll pulls out when used. I ended up with a design that uses magnets in the arms to secure a removable bar. This holds the roll in place for normal use, but lets the bar be pulled out with a bit of a yank in order to replace the roll.
