Vessel - End Grain
Available
After making a string of practical items, I thought it might be time to inject a bit of impracticality. This particular bit takes the form of a turned vessel showing end grain. Of course using thin sections of end grain is an utterly impractical way to make pretty much anything so it rather fits the bill.

There's a fair variety of wood types in the vessel but I can confidently state that Canada is the Country of Origin - in fact it is 95% our back yard with small amounts of the adjoining neighbour's yards with trace amounts of nearby relation's yards.

To maximize the end-grain effect I used rounded "logs" of various diameters and arranged them in a repeating spiral pattern, interconnected to provide a bit more stability. The fabrication started with a solid turned vessel of Maple into which holes were drilled and short branch pieces were glued. This assemblage went onto the lathe where it was rounded and hollowed and then the little bits of maple between the logs was removed until only "pure" logs were remaining.
