I had acquired a modest number of mostly one-foot-long finished plank cut-offs from a neighbour, which I thought might be maple or something like it. The donated planks became something of a "what can you do with this wood" challenge. I first made a
trivet but there was lots of wood left over and this is the second piece made with the planks. In contrast to the practicality of the trivet, this one is a decorative (i.e. impractical) bowl with thin maple pieces laminated with walnut veneer. I like the look of the dark veneer pieces as they traverse the curved contours of the bowl.
There's a surprising amount of colour and grain difference from piece to piece of the wood, but I thought that made it look more interesting. To contrast a bit more with the regularity of the laminations, I used an elliptical shape rather than a circle and tilted the long axis relative to the laminations. There are construction details
here.
