Trivet
A
We had an old wooden trivet (to hold hot pots) which had cracked and didn't seem to be worth the trouble to repair. Around the same time I happened to acquire some wood from a neighbour who was cleaning out a shed and thought that I might be able to make use of it (thanks Les!). The wood came in the form of a dozen or so foot-long varnished planks with plenty of "character" (read: dirt and dust). But when cleaned up and the finish removed, the wood looked fairly nice and I figure it's probably maple. It seemed like a good candidate for making a replacement trivet.

The new trivet isn't very big and took only a couple of the planks. It was made as a three-layer plywood to prevent warpage and looks nothing like the original trivet. Instead the shape emulates another bamboo trivet we have that I liked. I had originally just used wax on the new trivet as a finish, but it wasn't resistant to the steam it would experience, so I tried again with varnish. I'm not convinced that varnish is the final solution either since it may melt or burn with a hot pot, but if that happens perhaps I'll strip it off and try a light oil finish. There are some construction details here.
