An acquaintance of mine had requested a wooden candy dispenser and I was happy to put one together for her. Not being a huge candy consumer I wasn't even aware that they were a thing, other than those metal-and-glass items of fascination for children found in grocery stores and malls back in the day ("Can I have a nickel Mom?"). Of course these days it takes nothing more than a bit of on-line searching to familiarize one's self with even obscure candy dispensers (yes, the World Wide Web is the best thing since sliced bread. And really if the choice was WWW or slicing my own bread, I'd get out the serrated knife in an instant). But I digress.
I presented a few design options and shortly we had settled on some features (internal chute, rotary actuator, dark wood) and then I got to work on the drawings. To hold the candy, the machine uses a standard one-quart Mason jar which just screws into the top. The innards are mostly solid wood and are largely just glued together but the top can come off with the removal of a locking pin which allows one to address any critical candy jams.
I decided to make a second unit in parallel with the first since often that doesn't take much more time. They were of identical design except for the wood species with one being Walnut and the other Oak. Of course I took my usual in-progress photos which can be found
here.
