I had the urge to make another "pierced" piece. I had seen decorative metal covers intended for potpourri containers that one turned oneself, but I was not too crazy about them. Besides, the cover is potentially much more interesting than the container, so I turned a simple container, and then went about making an interesting cover. I used Maple Burl since it has little grain and lends itself well to patterns. The design was modified from a more-detailed tree drawing I had found on the 'net. I simplified it and reduced it to "tree" or "hole". The cover was first turned to make a rimmed convex shape, to which the pattern was then copied. A Dremel with drill bits and abrasive bits was used to form the holes, and then sandpaper-strip sanding rounded off the openings. And, no - I'm not a potpourri kind of guy - it was made as a gift.
