Stitching Pony
I had a request from a friend to build a wooden stitching pony. I readily agreed to put one together, but only after I first looked up what the heck it was. It turns out to be utterly devoid of equine characteristics and is in fact a clamp used by leather workers that holds together pieces to be stitched.

Subsequent investigation revealed that many stitching ponies will mount to a table or bench using a clamp but this particular design has a base that is held under the legs when in a sitting position, allowing access to the top. This one is made from Cherry, mostly since there was no preference for material and I had a bunch of Cherry pieces left over from previous projects. The jaws are lined with leather to help prevent marking the clamped pieces. In addition to the leather, the pony is composed of 5 pieces which are held together with glue, bolt knobs, screws and a hinge pin as appropriate. Fabrication was pretty straightforward with only one major screw-up, fixed almost invisibly.
