We had given to a relation a
decorative wooden wastebasket that previously resided in the bedroom. This resulted in a wastebasket void which was temporarily filled by a very mediocre blue plastic job. Clearly a new wooden one was going to be required.
This is of course the replacement. While surveying the World Wide Web of Wastebaskets, I had come across an image of a wooden wastebasket that looked like it was made of many vertical segments. Further research showed the segmenting was merely a consequence of the item being made from Bamboo, however I liked the look and lacking the the subtropical climate to grow bamboo I decided to replicate the look with a domestic hardwood - specifically Cherry. Admittedly, I didn't grow the Cherry either but it is certainly easier to come by in these parts than Bamboo.
The
construction process consisted of laminating 80 tapered and angled pieces together to make the walls. To this was added a bottom formed from shop-made Cherry plywood. Then the whole shebang was turned on the lathe to refine the profile and thin the walls to something practical.
