We have a small folding side table that we use out on the deck and it's an ideal size to hold a drink or a book next to seating. The table has an unusual folding action where it splits apart in the center, although I can't see that it offers any noticeable advantage over more conventional folding geometries other than being intriguing. However I thought it would be nice to have a couple more of these tables except made from wood rather than the aluminum of the original.
I checked to see what species of wood were suitable for outdoor use and found a larger number of options than I had expected. One that I was surprised to see on that list was Purpleheart (AKA Amaranth); it's a hard and heavy straight-grained wood from Latin America with a deep red color - one of my favorites that I've used for a number of items over the years. That seemed like a fine choice for a small table to go on a red-hued deck.
The tables
were made to be almost identical to the aluminum specimen, except with a bit of rounding in a few places to ease them away from the purely industrial look of the original.
