I had sort of incidently made a sphere out of some scrap wood when I was working on another project and then thought that it may make an interesting vessel so I went ahead and patched the cracks and hollowed it out. When that was done I was left with something that had some interesting grain but still looked pretty plain so I forged ahead and added some exterior detailing.
That gave it a bit more character although I had a great deal of trouble achieving clean edges between the black and the wood sections and it took a few attempts to finally get to something that looked decent. Some detail on the construction can be found
here.
