I find spirals to be an intriguing shape and I wanted to make a vessel that had a clearly visible twist to it. This was in the back of my mind as I was working on the
Star Vessel when a pile of cutoffs that I had stacked neatly on my bench caught my eye; "Hmmm...if I just gave each of these layers a twist...". And while it wasn't exactly what I'd had in mind, it looked like it could be made to work. In fact I started the spiral while still working on the star, just to provide some variety from all the shaping and sanding that one took.
Due to its origins, the spiral vessel of course shares the same walnut in the same laminated style as the star vessel. Forming the outside was also a similar manual shaping process, however the inside of the spiral was turned on the lathe rather than shaped. I continued with some common themes like contrasting top and bottom and a couple thin accent lines in maple. In general the construction
process was largely similar to the star vessel, but a bit less effort due to the turned interior.
