While working with some cedar 2x4s earlier in the summer, I noticed that one included the core of the tree and it had a nicely defined pattern of rings. I thought that if I was able to find a larger piece of wood with the right grain then I'd try making a breadboard using cedar to capture that pattern.
It turn out almost all the cedar 4x4 posts at Home Depot had the core included but without exception the posts were cracked, usually on the side closest to the core. I chose the best one I could find and cut it up to make hexagonal tiles from which to construct the board. I didn't want cracks (or filled cracks) in the finished product so I used just the best parts of the post but I still needed to make most of the cores off-center in the hexagons to avoid the cracked portions. Then it was just a matter of
sticking them together and doing a bit of sanding and shaping.
When I was done I still had about half the post left so I made a second one in the same shape, just this time with smaller square tiles rather than hexagonal.
