This is a rebuild of a stereoscopic slide viewer that a friend of mine had made. The viewer accepts pairs of 35mm slides and when held up to the light lets one view a stereoscopic (3D-like) image. I was looking for a project and he volunteered this one that he had put together many years ago. The viewer included custom-made lens holders and worked just fine but the body was a plastic box that had been previously used for some other project, so it was in little danger of being mistaken for a commercial product.
He suggested I could replace both the box and lens holders with a custom wood enclosure. I selected walnut for the viewer and made the body (front, sides and top) from a single piece of walnut with another flat piece forming the screw-attached bottom. Like the original, the rear wall consists of a translucent diffuser to provide a backlight for the slide. I reused the lenses and diffuser. The
construction involved hollowing, shaping and of course sanding but was relatively straightforward.
