After making a new tissue box cover for one of the bathrooms, the beige plastic cover in the other bathroom looked pretty pathetic by comparison. I immediately set out to remedy this situation by whipping up another one, completely unlike the first.
This cover is for a horizontal tissue box and uses alternating layers of maple pieces and walnut veneer. The maple was donated by a neighbour some years back and while I made a couple things with it, I still had a bit left over. I liked the look of the previous laminated
piece that resulted, so I essentially copied the construction here. The pieces were unfortunately not tall enough to just laminate them together to make a full-sized cover, so I
made separate sides and a top, which were assembled to form the full cover.
I had originally guessed that the wood might be maple even though it had some grain that looked uncharacteristic. However I recently bought a piece of Western Maple (AKA Big Leaf Maple) and it has an identical grain structure to those pieces, so I'm almost certain that's what it is.
2021 Update: Not many months after making this cover, the brain trust at Kimberly-Clark discontinued the box size that this cover was made to fit. They put the same number of tissues in a larger box so that there was an empty 1/2" of space above the tissues and they could save a fraction of a cent per box by having one less type of box to manage. So of course that meant that the cover was instantly rendered 1/2" too short. After making a couple more "modern-sized" covers in 2021, I went back to
update this one and add the necessary extra height.
